Sports are nothing without the players that play them! There were several very famous people who helped take the sports to new heights, drawing in fans from all around to see these athletes compete. Below are a few of the biggest ones.

Bill "Big Bill" Tilden

Big Bill was one of the first big tennis players of the time. He was the first American in history to win the Wimbledon in England.

George "Babe" Herman Ruth, Jr.

Babe Ruth was easily the greatest baseball player in the 1920's, and is a baseball legend to this day. He rocked the league with his massive swing and crushed the record for home runs in a season. He changed how the game was played forever.

Benny Leonard

Benny Leonard was one of the first major boxers in America. One could say he helped make the sport famous. He was known to "fight with his head", such as being intelligent when he fought. For example, he would say unnerving things to his opponents to buy himself time or to distract them, and help himself get the upper hand.

Thomas Hitchcock, Sr.

One of the first Polo players. He helped give the sport a foothold in America. He was the father of Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., who was also a polo player and died in a plane crash while in the Air Force.
